Columbia
Downtown San Diego’s Columbia district is surrounded by Ash Street to the north, "F" Street to the south, Union Street to the east, and the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay to the west. These borders place the Columbia district south of Little Italy, north of the Marina district, and west of the Core district. It is conveniently located near freeways, the San Diego Trolley, and the Santa Fe Depot where the Pacific Surfliner and the Coaster trains connect to Los Angeles and points north.
Mostly along the San Diego Bay, there are many new developments that are either underway or in the planning stages. One of these new developments is the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan (NEVP), which will include a 100-foot wide pedestrian pier stretching from Laurel Street to Market Street. This new development will become a San Diego landmark with boutiques, casual and fine dining, great amenities, and generous green space for both residents and visitors. The Columbia district will become a center for fine urban living with some of downtown San Diego's finest condominium buildings.
Other new developments in the Columbia district will be a mixture of fine hotels, office buildings and residential skyline towers. Further waterfront projects will include the Navy Broadway Complex and the Embarcadero Circle cruise ship terminal expansion. This is the fastest growing cruise ship port on the U.S. Pacific Coast, the homeport for Carnival Cruise Lines and Holland America Lines. It is also the embarkation and debarkation port for Celebrity Lines and Royal Caribbean Lines, which offer itineraries that include the Mexican Riviera, the Hawaiian Islands, Central America and the Panama Canal.

Core District
The Core District is considered the visual and physical center of downtown San Diego stretching from A Street to Broadway and Union Street and 12th. It borders on Cortez Hill to the north; Little Italy to the northwest; the Horton District and Gaslamp Quarter to the south; East Village to the east; and finally, to the west, we find the Colombia District. The retail and hotel developments in the Core District saw its inception when Alonzo Horton began to develop this area of downtown San Diego in the 1860s. The Core area of downtown became what was considered the fashionable business district and entertainment quarter with several well-known entertainment venues, among which was the 1929 California Theater, until the 1960s when urban decline began taking its toll.

Gaslamp Quarter
The Gaslamp Quarter is a 16 1/2 block district listed on the US National Register of Historic Places since 1980. The neighborhood is named after the gas lamps that used to line the streets. Four such new gas lamps revive the spirit of the past at the intersection of Market Street and 5th Avenue. This beautiful area includes 94 historic buildings, many of which are from the Victorian Era, all built between 1873 and 1930. The majority of them are still in use, featuring some 100 restaurants, 100 shops and over 30 nightclubs, offering a truly eclectic mix of culture, food and fun. The Quarter has emerged in the early 1900s, as the town's red light, especially due to the busy military port. Along the years it has had different names, including Rabbitville, Davis' Folly, Flea Town, Chinatown, Stingaree, New Town San Diego and many others, depending on its main residents.

Marina District
The Marina district in downtown San Diego is arguably the most beautiful and desirable neighborhood in San Diego though it has not always been so. Before the downtown San Diego redevelopment began in the 1980s, this was an area comprised of warehouses and empty lots; somewhere one would not want to visit after dark. Located on the waterfront of San Diego Bay with views of Point Loma and North Island Naval Air Base, and between is the glittering bay with the Pacific Ocean at the horizon. It is often said about any neighborhood it is location, location, location, and this is most accurate when describing the Marina district.
The Marina neighborhood stretches from the San Diego Bay in the west and spreads east toward the Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter in the middle of downtown San Diego bustling business area, the Core district, with its skyline view of high-rise buildings, most erected since the beginning of the renovation of downtown San Diego in the 1980s. Along the waterfront newly built high-rise condominiums cast mirror images of themselves in the glittering San Diego Bay. Eastward from the San Diego Bay one will find tree lined, quiet streets bordering condominium homes, quaint breakfast and lunch cafes and several world class eating establishments as well as downtown San Diego's best boutiques.

Cortez Hill
At one time, the El Cortez Hotel, now the El Cortez condos, dominated this downtown San Diego area and gave its name to Cortez Hill. The Cortez Hill is visible from all points of San Diego's central down-town and with the sparkling of lights from the El Cortez at night, illuminating the north end of San Diego's downtown area, it is a beautiful sight to behold. Cortez Hill offers a perfect location with 360* views, from Mexico on the south-east, to Point Loma Light House toward the west with the Pacific Ocean beyond, and the San Diego Bay sparkling to the south. Located north of Interstate 5 with Little Italy and the San Diego Bay to the immediate west and Interstate 163 to the east with the beautiful Balboa Park on the east side of the freeway, it occupies a prime area of San Diego.
